In the Beginner and Grammar levels we include the familiar stanzas of Hiawatha's childhood: By the shores of Gitche Gumee,By the shining Big-Sea-Water,Stood the wigwam of Nokomis............... In the Logic and Rhetoric level we discover that The Song of Hiawatha is a story for the white settlers in the New World, offering a history of the land they have occupied. It is written in a way that allows the readers to discover the roots of their new home, not simply as strangers in a foreign land, but as a continuation of a rich heritage. Longfellow, who incorporated Catholic themes in many of his works, wrote this narrative poem based on an Indian legend. He uses this tale to bridge the gap between two cultures. We use The Song of Hiawatha in Unit One of Volume Four: American History to introduce Native American culture and the role played by Catholic missionaries to the New World who used Indian language and symbolism to share the gospel.
